#Brazinga2014: Latest FIFA/Coca Cola rankings are out, Brazil move up to third rank

With just a week left for the 2014 FIFA World Cup to kick-off in Brazil, the latest FIFA/Coca Cola rankings are out.

The World and European champions, Spain, have retained the 1st spot and Germany have retained the 2nd rank in the FIFA/Coca Cola rankings. World Cup hosts, Brazil, have moved one rank ahead to the 3rd rank by pushing Portugal to 4th rank. Argentina have moved up by two ranks, to 5th from previous 7th. Similarly, Switzerland have also moved up by two ranks, from 8th to 6th. South American teams Uruguay and Colombia have fallen down on the latest rankings.

Uruguay have fallen down to 7th from their previous 6th, where as Colombia are down to 8th from 5th. Italy's position in the latest rankings is unchanged. England  have moved up to 10th rank from their previous 11th. England have had a fluctuating rankings since Hodgson's appointment in May 2012. England were ranked seventh in the world, Roy Hodgson took over as the head coach. They have been as high as third and as low as 17th in the 25 months since he took charge. Belgium, who are touted to be the  'dark horses' at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, have moved up to the 11th from 12th. The 2004 UEFA Euro champions Greece are down to 12th from 10th.

Croatia, who play Brazil in their opening World Cup match, have moved up to 18th, previously on 20th. The 1998 World Cup champions, France, are down to 17th by one rank. Bosnia and Herzegovina, who will be playing their first ever World Cup, have moved up by four ranks to 21st. Algeria is now ranked highest in Africa, after moving up three ranks to 22nd rank. Côte d’Ivoire are two ranks down to 23rd and second amongst African countries. Ghana positioned 37th, is way behind the other opponents of their Group G. Egypt, who will not be a part of World Cup, have gone down twelve ranks to 36th. They have the biggest drop in terms of points (down by 83 points).

Iran heads Asian confederation teams by moving up to 43rd. The United States of America at 13th rank lead the CONCACAF nations. Australia is the lowest-ranked team at the World Cup, at 62nd rank. Scotland have moved up by five ranks to 27th,  Wales have risen six places to 41st and the Republic of Ireland have dropped to 70th. Northern Ireland down are to 90th rank, which is their worst ever position. Northern Ireland are ranked behind the likes of El Salvador, Albania, Libya and Jordan and just one rank ahead of Trinidad and Tobago. Palestine have made the biggest move in terms of ranks and points. With the current rank of 94th, Palestine have moved up in the FIFA rankings by 71 ranks (up by 270 points). 

With the latest FIFA/Coca Cola rankings, it is evident that Group D is the 'Group of Death'. It is the only group with three teams in the top ten according to latest FIFA rankings. This is how Group D stands with the new rankings: Group D - Costa Rica (28), England (10), Italy (9), Uruguay (7). It is statistically the toughest group. Group H is the only group with no team placed in the top ten: Group H - Algeria (22), Belgium (11), Russia (19), South Korea (57).
